Looking Glass_43_DIGBY NECK_edited.png

October 12, 2014, The broken windows, peeling paint, and collapsing roof of this abandoned farmhouse on Digby Neck tell a tale of time passing, of past lives and inevitable changes in this image captured in 2014.

Photography as a storytelling medium captures not just moments in time but the essence of life in a single frame. It transcends the limits of spoken language, offering a universal way to communicate emotions, experiences, and memories. A well-composed photograph can tell a story that draws from the context of time and space, revealing the layers of human experience—joy, struggle, beauty, or decline—without the need for words.

For example, consider this photograph of an abandoned farmhouse on Digby Neck. The broken windows, peeling paint, and overgrown vegetation tell a tale of time passing.

Entropy in photography is subtly at work in every image, revealing how time erodes and alters reality. A photograph freezes a fleeting moment, but in doing so, it also captures the transient nature of everything within it. The colors of a sunset will soon fade, the smiles of youth will one day age, and even the photograph itself, whether printed or digital, will deteriorate over time.

This relationship between photography and entropy adds layers to the stories captured. While a photograph might initially serve as a snapshot of a single moment, entropy reminds us of the inevitable passage of time and the impermanence of all things. Over the years, the photograph itself becomes a part of the narrative. The fading paper, the cracks in an old frame, or even the pixelation of a digital file, these transformations are evidence of entropy at work. Although this old house no longer exists, its image is preserved for all time

Thus, photography becomes not just a means of storytelling but also a reflection on the nature of time and transformation. It captures life in all its vibrancy while acknowledging the quiet forces of change that have shaped the world. In every image, whether of a joyful celebration or a scene of quiet desolation, photography shows how moments slip away and how time, in its slow, relentless march, redefines the stories we tell.
